The late Tomasz Knapik - voice talent

Tomasz Knapik (born 16 September 1943 in Warsaw, died 6 September 2021 in Bielawa) was a Polish film, radio and television voice artist, a doctor of electrical engineering, and an academic lecturer. His distinctive voice and enormous body of work made him a legend of the Polish voice-over world.

Knapik graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology, where he earned his doctorate and specialised in automotive electrical engineering. For many years he lectured at the university's Faculty of Transport, supervising more than 200 engineering and master's theses.

He began his media career even before finishing school, at the Scouts' Broadcasting Station. He then worked at Polish Radio and Polish Television, where he read foreign films live and materials for the Warsaw Television News. In the 1990s, during the heyday of VHS tapes, he was one of the most frequently heard voice artists, reading films for both legal and pirate distributors.

After the political transformation in Poland, Knapik became the main voice artist for Polsat, reading nearly all of the station's films, series and trailers. He also worked with other private TV stations such as Polonia 1 and Tele 5, and his voice accompanied viewers of "Uwaga! Pirat" and "STOP Drogówka".

In 2008 his voice became a permanent element of Warsaw's public transport, announcing stops on buses and trams. Knapik also appeared in commercials, TV programmes and cabarets, and from 2010 he was the narrator of the RMF FM radio novel "Dom nad wysypiskiem".

Tomasz Knapik died on 6 September 2021, and his ashes were laid to rest at the Old Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw during a secular ceremony. He was the father of Maciej Knapik, a translator and television journalist.
